George Washington Carver Middle School is a top-ranked public middle school in Florida which specializes in foreign languages and advanced math and science classes. It is located in the West Grove, a Miami neighborhood originally settled by Bahamian immigrants. Carver is comprised of academically- talented students from all over the city and the globe.
The West Grove is a diverse mix of residents who range from working class families to some of the wealthiest Miamians. The former dump sites used to discard the ashes of Old Smokey are all around us, near both very modest homes and immense mansions. For the last 90 years, the residents of the West Grove have been exposed to chemicals that have the potential to create severe, long-term health consequences. These chemicals include arsenic, lead and cadmium, which are listed in the World Health Organization’s “10 Chemicals of Major Public Health Concern.”
